Materials and Technologies

In the context of Materials and Technology, Siberia is considered an area of development of innovations, primarily in the field of new materials. Here are some examples of what specialists are working on.

Development of hydrogen materials science in Siberia: the production technology of materials and alloys with special properties. The resulting materials will show a high degree of strength over a wide range of temperatures, which is crucial for aviation and aerospace engineering applications. The work is being carried out with the support of Tomsk State University, Institute of Chemical Physics (Armenia), and the Siberian Chemical Industrial Complex.

Development of high-performance adsorbents and the technology of their use to improve the volume and the quality of associated petroleum gas processing in organizations within the Siberian region. The project is being implemented with the support of SIBUR, Institute of Catalysis SB RAS, Lyon Institute of Catalysis, and Tomsk State University.

Development of personalized biomaterials with targeted delivery of biologically active substances for the treatment of diseases typical of the Siberian region. The biomaterials developed will have properties that can suppress inflammation and stimulate healing. The implants based on biodegradable and biocompatible polymers should provide stability and long-term control of local immune response. The project is being implemented with the support of Tbilisi State University, The Institute of High Current Electronics, Russian Academy of Sciences, University of Heidelberg, University of Munster, USA, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, French National Institute for Health and Medical Research, and Marcotech oHG.

Reclamation and Bioremediation of Soils and Water Bodies

The master's programme provides students with professional knowledge in the fields of: reclamation of soil contaminated as a result of man-made and natural disasters; restoration of the natural productivity of water bodies and agricultural systems; reclamation of lands disturbed during construction of linear structures. The professional training of the Master's Degree students will allow them to work in the leading positions in research institutions, environmental departments of large industrial companies, design and survey departments, bureaus, centres, companies and other ecology and nature institutions.

The Master's programme is aimed at potential employers: “Oblkomprirody”, the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Tomsk region, federal and regional bodies of environmental protection, research and design institutes (TomskNIPINeft, TomskTISIz, IMCES SB RAS, Institute of Biology and Biophysics, Tomsk State University, etc.), industrial companies (Rosneft, LUKOIL, Tomskneftekhim, Tomskgaz, SCC, etc.).

Groundwork for Scientific Projects

Developing technology and manufacturing low-toxic carbamide-formaldehyde resin for environmentally friendly wooden panels. Mega-grant of the Government of the Russian Federation as per Decree No.218. The amount of funding in 2013-2015: 176,600,000 rub.

A resource-efficient technology for production of modified urea-formaldehyde resins (UFR) intended for the production of wood composite materials of low toxicity, developed together with Tomsklesdrev LLC for implementation in the Russian industrial complex.

Leader: Viktor Sergeevich Malkov, Assistant Professor at the Department of Organic Chemistry of the TSU Faculty of Chemistry.

Results: the resource-efficient technology of UFR modification with bifunctional organic compounds, which allow to improve significantly the physical and mechanical (10-25%) as well as toxicological characteristics (corresponding emission classes E0,5 and E0) of the final product, has been developed and implemented in the Russian industrial complex.

Developing prototypes for technological solutions in the synthesis of additional nanostructural alloys and their use in the production of light alloys with enhanced operating properties. Government funds provided under the Federal Targeted Programme Research and Development on Priority Directions for Russia’s Scientific-Technological Complex 2014-2020. Funds provided: 25 million RUB.

In cooperation with enterprises of Siberia and Brunel University, technical requirements and proposals for the production and application of nanostructured master alloys that are used in the implementation of new innovative technologies for further industrial adoption of the results are being developed.

Leader: Alexander Borisovich Vorozhtsov, Professor of the Department of Mathematical Physics at the TSU Faculty of Physics and Technology.

Results: a solution to improve the quality of light alloys that are used or may be used in the future in the production of automobiles, aircrafts, structures, cables and other products made of aluminum and magnesium alloys. The developed design elements are based on new materials and can significantly improve the energy efficiency of vehicles by reducing the weight of the structure, reduce the amounts of materials used in production of electrical wires and other products, increase the safety of operation. In particular, the replacement of structural elements made of alloy steels with lightweight composites will significantly increase energy-weight and strength characteristics of aerospace products, as well as engineering industrial structures.
